Druids: Cool AF or Crazy Mofos?

This is P’s favorite religion so far… except for the human sacrifices. The real question is did they sacrifice people? Because if they did and the carving in the Eno is somehow connected to them, this got a whole lot creepier.

I really knew nothing about the Druids other than the fact that they existed. How did I not know they might have been into human sacrifice?! I would have paid more attention in history class if someone had mentioned that.

I should say no one knows for sure if they actually sacrificed people. The Druids never wrote anything down because they believed their teachings were sacred. The only things we do know were written by the ancient Romans.

The Druids are THAT old. And since the Romans were the ultimate world conquerors and spent all of their time stealing everybody else’s land, it’s totally believable that they’d lie about what the locals had been up to BEFORE the brilliant Romans saved them from their “barbaric” ways. The Druids might never have been into human sacrifice at all.

The reason P likes them is they were the environmentalists of their time – all of their mystical practices centered around Mother Nature.

Since I found the carving in Eno River State Park – a 4500 acre nature reserve – that makes sense. The Druids were Celtic so I looked into their gods and goddesses. None of them are the spiral goddess. Besides the male gods, Dagda and Cernunnos, I actually found more goddesses than gods and none of the goddesses – the Morrigan, Brigid, Ceridwen – resemble that carving.

I did find spirals in Celtic beliefs. They have a three spiral symbol known as the Triskele or Triskelion. The triple spiral represents both the physical and spiritual aspects of existence. So a spiral carving would make sense, but why the single spiral instead of the three?

Druidism disappeared for a very long time. Then it came back in the last couple hundred years, but I’m not sure it’s really the same religion it always was. I think it’s somewhat popular again now.

Although there is a lot of overlap, my gut says the carving isn’t Druid.

I promised P since I revealed his nickname in the last post, I have to tell you my own embarrassing nickname. When I was little, I was the shortest player on my tee ball team. Since I also played short stop, the coach started calling me Short Stuff and it stuck. It was my nickname for years.

Are you happy now, P?!
